DIRECT CONTROLS (NO SHIFT REQUIRED)

GAMEPAD

• Hold a direction to keep walking. Anything you press on the pad stops resting, travel and auto-explore.
• LB throws (or shoots) your readied missile and LT zaps your readied wand: the stick or D-Pad then picks the direction. RB, RT and R3 read, quaff or eat at once when there is only one to choose. With more, the Pack opens for you to pick.
• In the Pack, up / down step through your items and highlight the first button of each. Left / right reach its other buttons, the tabs and Close. LT and RT show the tab to the left and to the right: All, Weapons, Armor and so on. Wield, wear and drop from here.
• While aiming a wand or a throw, press two D-Pad buttons together, or push the stick into a corner, for a diagonal.
• A question such as "Descend anyway?" opens with Cancel highlighted. On the game-over screen the first (A) only highlights New Run, so a press left over from the fight does not skip the tombstone.
• Rest, the Map, the Codex and Help have no pad button: use the keyboard, the mouse or the touch screen for those.
• (A) is the bottom face button, (B) the right, (X) the left and (Y) the top: Cross, Circle, Square and Triangle on a PlayStation pad. LB / RB are the bumpers and LT / RT the triggers (L1 / R1 and L2 / R2), pulled at least half way. L3 and R3 are the clicks of the left and right sticks.
• If the pad does nothing, press one of its buttons once: a browser only notices a pad after that. The first pad connected is the one that plays. On a pad the browser does not recognise as a standard layout, only the left stick works.

TOUCH SCREENS

• Tap a tile next to you to step or attack. Tap a tile further away to walk there.
• Hold a finger on the map to inspect what is there, and slide to look at other tiles.
• Drag with one finger to look around the floor. The view comes back when you act.
• Pinch to change the map zoom.
• The joystick in the corner of the map moves in eight directions: push it to step, hold it to keep walking, and tap it to wait. Options can swap it for a D-pad of nine buttons, or turn it off.
• While aiming a wand or a throw, tap a tile, or push the joystick that way and let go. Tap your hero, or tap the joystick, to cancel. On the D-pad, press a direction, or the middle button to cancel.
• Menu opens Sheet, Map, Options, Save, Codex, Help and HUD when the top bar has no room for them.
• With the phone on its side, the slider at the top of each column folds it away: the left one down to the depth and the three bars, the right one down to icons.

THE QUEST

You have entered the 26 treacherous depths of the Dungeons of Doom. Your mission is to descend to floor 26, retrieve the mythical Amulet of Yendor, and fight your way back up to floor 1 to escape alive with glory and fortune!

SURVIVAL TIPS

• Shooting with a Bow: In classic Rogue, to shoot arrows from a bow, open your Pack (I) and Wield the Short Bow as your weapon. Then press T (or click Shoot) to fire your readied arrows. Firing arrows while wielding a bow grants +50% bonus damage and extra accuracy! (Throwing arrows without wielding a bow throws them by hand for minimal damage).
• Quick Arsenal: Equip your missile weapon (like flight arrows) and readied wand. Hitting T immediately fires/throws your equipped missile, and Z zaps your readied wand with zero menu delay!
• Identify items carefully: Unidentified potions and scrolls can be miraculous or cursed. Scrolls of Identify reveal their true nature.
• Watch your hunger: Moving burns calories. Eat food rations (U) before you run out: an empty stomach makes you faint helplessly, and you starve 850 turns later. Keep an eye on the HUNGER bar at the right end of the vitals bar!
• Beware Monster Abilities: Aquators rust armor, Leprechauns steal gold, Nymphs steal items, Rattlesnakes poison strength, and Vampires drain maximum health!
• Search dead ends: If a corridor suddenly ends with no door, press F several times to uncover secret doors or hidden traps.

GAME MODES

• NeonCrawl: the full game. A perk at each new level, bones, and stairs you can climb freely. 26 floors.
• Classic Rogue: the 1980 rules. No perks, no bones, and the stairs up stay shut until you hold the Amulet of Yendor. 26 floors.
• Hard Mode: 50 floors, one way down, with perks and bones. On the climb back every floor is new and holds no loot.
• Custom: one switch per rule: Free Ascent, Save-Scumming Mode, Perks, Bones, Two Weapons, Shrines, Fountains, Water and Chasms, Vaults, Teleport Pads, Collapsed Corridors, Set Pieces, Hazard Rooms, Themed Rooms, Monster Lairs, Merchants, Locked Doors, Levers and Gates, Floor Types and 50-Floor Hard Mode. Your switches are remembered.
• Two Weapons (NeonCrawl and Hard Mode): wield a bow and a melee weapon and both stay equipped, one in hand and one slung. Bump a monster and you draw the melee weapon; shoot arrows and you take up the bow. Each switch costs one extra turn before the strike or the shot. A cursed weapon in hand cannot be put away.
• The mode is chosen on the title screen before a run and stays with that run. The log names it at the start.

FOUNTAINS

• What they are: about one floor in five holds a fountain: a blue basin on the floor of a room. NeonCrawl and Hard Mode have them; Classic Rogue does not.
• Drinking: stand on the fountain and use the Quaff command. While you stand on one that still holds water, Quaff drinks from it; to drink a potion there, choose it in the Pack.
• The gamble: each drink does what one potion would, good or bad, drawn as potions are found: healing and strength are likely, poison, blindness and confusion are in there too. The drink takes a turn.
• What you learn: nothing. A drink identifies no potion, though what happens to you may be a hint.
• It runs dry after one to three drinks, and you cannot tell how many are left. A dry fountain turns grey and stays where it is.
• The same seed's fountain gives the same drinks in the same order. You cannot drink while levitating.

WATER AND CHASMS

• Where: from the second floor down, some floors have a pool or two in their rooms, a flooded stretch of corridor, or a pit. NeonCrawl and Hard Mode have them; Classic Rogue does not.
• Water can be waded. Each square takes two turns, and each square may rust the armor you wear unless you make a saving throw. Leather armor, protected armor and a Ring of Maintain Armor are safe; so is armor you have taken off.
• Dropping things in water: they sink and are lost. A potion floats and can be picked up again. A scroll is ruined.
• A chasm can be jumped into. The first step toward it only warns you; the same step again jumps. You land on the floor below at a random spot, hurt for 1 to 6, with everything you carry. A confused stagger goes straight over the edge.
• Throwing things into a chasm: they land on the floor below and are lying there when you arrive. A thrown potion still breaks.
• Monsters: bats, kestrels and griffins fly over both. An Aquator swims. No other monster enters water, and none walks into a chasm, so water between you and a monster keeps it off you.
• Levitation carries you over both. If it ends over water you splash in; over a chasm, you fall.
• Walking by click and auto-explore keep to dry ground. A click goes through water only when there is no dry way, and never through a chasm.

VAULTS

• What they are: about one floor in six, from the second floor down, has a vault: a small sealed room cut into solid rock beside another room. NeonCrawl and Hard Mode have them; Classic Rogue does not.
• Finding one: a door in a room that opens on a few squares of passage and a blank wall is the sign. Stand at the end of the passage and search (the Search key) until the hidden door shows.
• What it holds: two to four items, none of them cursed, and a pile of gold as large as a floor two deeper would give.
• The guard: half the vaults have one, a monster from two floors deeper, asleep until you come in. Sixth Sense feels it through the wall.
• Other ways in: a Scroll of Magic Mapping draws the vault and its door. A teleport may set you down inside; search the walls there for the way out.
• Once you have found a vault, the minimap and the Tactical Map draw its walls in gold, and the inspector names it.

TELEPORT PADS

• What they are: about one floor in four holds a pair of teleport pads: green rings set in the floor of two rooms far apart. NeonCrawl and Hard Mode have them; Classic Rogue does not.
• Crossing: step on a pad and you stand on its twin. The step takes its turn; the crossing takes none. It works both ways. To go back, step off the pad and on again.
• A blocked pad: if a monster stands on the twin, the pad falls silent and you stay where you are.
• Monsters walk over a pad as over floor. But one that is awake and sees you vanish makes for the pad and follows you through. It cannot arrive while you, or anything else, stand on the far pad.
• Things on a pad stay there: a thrown or dropped item lies on the pad, and you pick it up as you pass.
• The maps: once you have been through a pair, the Tactical Map joins the two pads with a line, and a clicked walk may use them as a shortcut. A pad you have not tried is walked around, and auto-explore never steps on one.
• A levitating hero floats over a pad. The same seed has the same pads in the same places.

LOCKED DOORS AND KEYS

• What they are: from the second floor down, a floor may have one locked door. About one floor in ten has it on the way to the stairs down; about one vault in two is shut by one instead of a hidden door. The log says so when you arrive. NeonCrawl and Hard Mode have them; Classic Rogue does not.
• The key lies on the same floor, on a square you can walk to without passing the door, wading, clearing rubble or finding a hidden door. Walk over it and it hangs on your belt: it takes no room in the pack and cannot be dropped, thrown or stolen. The top bar shows KEY while you carry it.
• Opening: walk into the door with the key. The door opens and the key is used up. Stepping through is your next move.
• Forcing: with no key, walk into the door; the first bump only warns you. Each bump after that takes a turn and wakes every monster on the floor. A try works when a 20-sided roll is no more than your Strength, and the third one that works breaks the door open.
• From the far side the latch lifts with no key. If you arrive behind the door by the stairs from below, a fall, a teleport or a pad, you can walk out.
• Nothing passes a locked door: no monster, no arrow, no bolt, and you cannot see through it.
• A key never leaves its floor. Take the stairs with it, or fall, and it slips from your belt; it is back on its square when you return.
• Auto-explore does not force doors; it tells you when a locked door bars the way. The same seed has the same locks and the same keys.

LEVERS AND GATES

• What they are: from the second floor down, about one floor in six has an iron gate down across a doorway or a corridor, and somewhere else on the floor the lever that works it. The log says so when you arrive. A floor has one gate at most, and none if it has a locked door. NeonCrawl and Hard Mode have them; Classic Rogue does not.
• The gate: you can see through it, and arrows, thrown things and wand bolts fly between its bars. Nothing walks through it: not you, and no monster.
• The lever is always on the side of the gate that the stairs up are on, on the floor of a room you can walk to without wading, clearing rubble or finding a hidden door. Something may be asleep beside it.
• Pulling it: stand on the lever and Search. That turn pulls it and the gate rises. Stepping through is up to you.
• Lowering it: pull the lever again and the gate comes down, unless you or a monster stands under it. Monsters cannot pull levers, so a gate you have lowered keeps them on the other side.
• From the far side a chain hangs by the gate. If you arrive behind a closed gate by the stairs from below, a fall, a teleport or a pad, walk into it: hauling it up takes one turn.
• Auto-explore pulls no lever; it tells you when a gate bars the way. The Tactical Map joins a lever to its gate once you have seen both. The same seed has the same gates and the same levers.

COLLAPSED CORRIDORS

• What they are: about one floor in three, from the second floor down, has one to three corridor squares choked with rubble. NeonCrawl and Hard Mode have them; Classic Rogue does not.
• Clearing: walk into the rubble. Each step is a turn of work. A heap takes three to five turns: one less at Strength 17 or 18, two less from 19 up, one more below 8. The turn that finishes it opens the square, and your next step takes you through.
• Half done: the work you have put in is kept if you walk away, and it is saved with the floor.
• Noise: each turn of work, one time in three, wakes every sleeping monster within eight squares.
• Until it is cleared nothing passes: no step, no arrow, no bolt, no line of sight.
• Monsters go round. A Troll, a Yeti, a Jabberwock or a Dragon smashes through in one move and leaves the corridor open.
• Walking: a clicked walk counts the work and takes whichever way is quicker, through or round. Going through, it keeps working until the way is open, and stops if the noise wakes something. Auto-explore never clears rubble.
• The inspector says how much work is left. The same seed has the same rubble in the same places.

THEMED ROOMS

• What they are: from the third floor down, about one room in eight is a themed room: a library, an armory, a larder, a barracks or a crypt. A floor has two at most. NeonCrawl and Hard Mode have them; Classic Rogue does not.
• Knowing one: the log names the room as you walk in. From then on its floor is tinted in the view, on the minimap and on the Tactical Map, and the inspector names it.
• Library: three to five scrolls. Read any scroll while you stand in the library and, one time in five, you also work out another kind of scroll.
• Armory: two to four weapons and suits of armor, and two or three guards. The guards are awake: they all come for you the moment you step in, and stealth does not get you past them.
• Larder: two to four rations of food, and two or three bats, snakes or rattlesnakes at them.
• Barracks: four to six monsters of one kind, asleep, and their gold pooled in one pile.
• Crypt: three to five old graves. Stand on a grave and search (the Search key) to lift its stone. One grave in three holds a ghost, which rises beside you. The others hold a little gold or one item.
• The same seed has the same themed rooms, and the rest of every floor is unchanged. The room you arrive in, a treasure room, a maze and a vault are never themed.

SET PIECES

• What they are: small pieces of map made by hand. About one floor in five, from the second floor down, has one, and never more than one. NeonCrawl and Hard Mode have them; Classic Rogue does not.
• In a room: some stand on the floor of a room: a ring of pillars round an altar, a moat round an island, a pit with a ledge, a prize with traps at its corners.
• In the rock: others are a room of their own, cut into solid rock and joined to the floor by a door and a short passage: a cell with its keeper, a trapped gallery, a closet with a teleport pad. Some of these doors are hidden, as a vault's is.
• Hidden doors: a block of pillars with something shut inside has a door that looks like a pillar. Search beside it.
• What they hold: items in a set piece are never cursed. What sleeps in one may come from a floor or two deeper.
• Other rules: a piece with water, a fountain, an altar, a teleport pad or rubble needs that rule switched on. With it off, that piece is left out or that square is plain floor.
• The log names a piece when you first stand in it. From then the inspector names its squares, and the minimap and the Tactical Map outline it. The same seed has the same piece in the same place.

MONSTER LAIRS

• What it is: from the fifth floor down, about one floor in eight has a champion: a monster from a few floors deeper, with a name of its own, at home in a room of its own. Floors 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 always have a lair, so one of them can have two, each with its own champion. Never on the Amulet's floor. NeonCrawl and Hard Mode have them; Classic Rogue does not.
• The champion: half as many hit points again as its kind, +2 to hit, twice the experience, and one trait. Fast: it acts twice a turn. Regenerating: it heals one hit point every turn. Armored: its Armor Class is 3 better. It sleeps until you disturb it. A ring of gold marks it in the view, and the inspector names its trait.
• The lair: gnawed bones lie on its floor, always on the squares just inside its doors. The inspector names the bones, and warns you of a lair when you look at one of its doors. The log names the champion as you step in, and the floor is tinted from then on in the view, on the minimap and on the Tactical Map.
• The drop: the champion carries one good item and drops it where it dies: a weapon or a suit of armor enchanted +1 to +3, a ring or a wand. It is never cursed.
• The record: the kill is written in the Chronicle, and the Graveyard lists the champions each hero killed.
• The same seed has the same lairs and champions, and the rest of every floor is unchanged. A Wand of Slow Monster takes the speed from a fast one, and Cancellation stops a regenerating one healing.

HAZARD ROOMS

• What they are: rooms whose danger is the room itself. From the fifth floor down, about one room in twelve is one, and a floor has one at most. NeonCrawl and Hard Mode have them; Classic Rogue does not.
• Gas: a room full of confusing gas or of sleeping gas. Your first turn inside tells you which, and costs nothing. After that every turn inside is a saving throw against poison: fail and you are confused for four to six turns, or asleep for two to four. Monsters in the room breathe it too. An item or two lies inside.
• Flooded room: the whole room is knee-deep in water, waded at two turns a square, and your armor may rust. A dry rise in the middle holds gold and an item or two. Most monsters cannot follow you into the water. Only on runs with Water and Chasms.
• Dark-fall room: a lit room with sleeping monsters and something lying at its far side. Stand three squares or more from every door of the room and the light goes out for good, and everything in the room wakes. Within two squares of a door nothing happens.
• Reading one from the door: inspect the floor before you step in. A gas room's floor is called Hazy Floor, and a dark-fall room's is called Quiet Floor. A flooded room shows its water.
• Perks and boons: Steady Mind shortens the confusion and the sleep. The Clarity boon keeps the confusing gas off altogether.
• Once a hazard has shown itself, the room's floor is tinted in the view, on the minimap and on the Tactical Map, and the inspector names it. The same seed has the same hazard room, and the rest of every floor is unchanged.

MERCHANTS

• What it is: the fourth floor always has a shop, and from the third floor down about one floor in seven has one: a room with one door, a shopkeeper and six to ten wares lying on its floor. Never on the Amulet's floor. NeonCrawl and Hard Mode have them; Classic Rogue does not.
• Trading: bump into the shopkeeper to open the shop. Buy a ware off the floor, pay for one you carry, or sell from your pack. Trading takes no turn. Take off what you wear or wield before you sell it.
• Prices: each item is priced by the worth Rogue gave it, on the same scale as a shrine's tithe, so a shop and a shrine want the same gold and both cost more deeper down. The shop pays half what it asks. An item you have not identified is priced as an average of its kind, so the price tells you nothing: it costs half as much again to buy and sells for only a quarter. Identify first and you pay less and get more.
• Wares: walking over a ware takes nothing; the log tells you its price. Pick it up to carry it about the shop, marked UNPAID in your pack, but you cannot use it until you pay. Drop it in the shop to put it back.
• Theft: walk out of the door with a ware unpaid and the shopkeeper is furious: it is fast, strong and coming for you. A ware that leaves the shop any other way, by a teleport, a trapdoor or a throw through the door, flies back to the shop. Strike the shopkeeper or zap a wand at it and it turns on you too; it shrugs off every wand but Magic Missile.
• A shop whose shopkeeper is dead or furious is closed, and nothing in it has a price. The same seed has the same shops and wares, and the rest of every floor is unchanged. A shop in bones is empty.

SHRINES

• What they are: the second floor always holds a shrine, and below it about one floor in four does: a golden altar on the floor of a room. NeonCrawl and Hard Mode have them; Classic Rogue does not.
• Praying: step onto the shrine. It offers three favours. Choose one, and a small, medium or large offering of gold: a larger offering buys a stronger favour. Then the shrine crumbles.
• The price is in tithes. A tithe is 20 gold plus 10 for each floor of depth, so shrines deeper down ask for more. A medium offering costs twice a small one, a large one four times.
• Leaving without choosing costs nothing, and the shrine waits. Step onto it again, or press the Pick Up key while standing on it.
• A favour that would do nothing for you (healing when you are not hurt) cannot be chosen.
• Boons: some shrines lend you ranks of a perk for a while. A boon lasts 100 turns for each floor of the shrine's depth, then fades. The Character Sheet lists your boons and the turns they have left.
• Thirty favours in all: healing, food, strength, your weapon and armor, lifted curses, identified items, the map, luck, gold, boons and more. Each shrine offers three.
• The Shrine Codex (title screen, or the Codex in a run) lists every favour a shrine has offered you, in any run in this browser. While any is undiscovered, one of a shrine's three is new to it.

RACES

• Choose a race on the title screen, under the game mode. Your choice is remembered. Each race starts with perks, which you can raise at later levels like any other, and each has its own figure on the map.
• Human: Quick Learner 1 (+10% experience), and one perk of your choice from the whole list as the run starts.
• Dwarf: Darkvision 1 and Tremorsense 2.
• Halfling: Lucky 1 and Dodge 1.
• Elf: Darkvision 2 and Fleet Foot 1.
• Orc: Glutton 1 and Cleave 1.
• Catfolk: Marksman 1 and Quick Draw 1.
• Dragonkin: Thick Skin 1 and Heavy Hand 1.
• Races are made of perks. In Classic Rogue, or in Custom with Perks off, there are no races and your hero is the plain adventurer of Rogue.

PERKS

• A pick at each new level: when your hero gains a level, a dialog offers three new perks. Take one of them, or raise a perk you already have by one rank instead.
• Ranks stack: each rank adds the same amount again, up to the perk's maximum. The Character Sheet lists your perks and what they add up to.
• Deciding later: close the dialog and it comes back at the end of your next turn. A pick is never lost.
• The Perk Codex (title screen, or the Codex in a run) lists every perk you have been offered, in any run in this browser. The rest show as "???".
• One of the three is always new to your Perk Codex while any perk is still undiscovered. Once you have discovered them all, the same seed offers the same perks as long as you make the same choices.
• Darkvision: without it you see only the squares next to you in a dark room or a corridor. Each rank adds 2 squares, up to 7. It does not see through walls.
• Tremorsense: a red ring marks the square of any monster that moved or struck within 5 squares per rank and that you cannot see, even while you are blind. If you have met its kind on this run, the ring shows which monster it is. Silent monsters (Snake, Wraith, Phantom, Ghost) and flyers (Bat, Kestrel, Griffin) leave no ring; the Codex says which monsters make no noise.
• A level lost to a Wraith and won back gives no second pick. A Potion of Raise Level gives one.
• Classic Rogue has no perks. Choose it on the title screen, or choose Custom and switch Perks off.

BONES

• What they are: when a hero dies on depth 4 or deeper, the floor may be kept as bones, as in NetHack: the map, its monsters and items, a grave where the hero fell, their ghost asleep on it, and their pack and gold lying around it.
• Leaving them: the deeper the death, the more likely. About half the deaths on depths 4 to 7 leave bones, two in three on depths 8 to 11, and more below that. Each depth keeps one set of bones. None are left on the bottom floor, on the climb in Hard Mode, or in Save-Scumming mode.
• Finding them: the first time you come down to a depth that has bones, they may be the floor you arrive on, and the log says "You have an eerie feeling...". Bones left by your own earlier run of the same seed are always found. Any others are found 1 time in 3. Bones are found once and are then gone.
• The grave: point at it, or step onto it, to read the headstone: who lies there, what killed them, where and when.
• The ghost wakes like any sleeping monster. It moves one square every fourth turn and its touch does 1 damage, but it is very hard to hit and has as many hit points as its hero had. You can walk away from it.
• The loot: most of what the dead hero wore or wielded is cursed (4 times in 5), and you know nothing about any of it until you identify it. The Amulet of Yendor is never left in bones.
• Seeds: bones change what a seed gives you, so two runs of one seed can differ. Turn Bones off in Options and nothing is kept or found: a seed then plays the same every time.
• Bones are kept in this browser only.
